Flossing with braces can be a real challenge. We want you to keep your teeth healthy and clean during braces treatment, so Dr. R. Cree Hamilton would like to give you some tips for flossing with braces.
Use Waxed Floss
If floss is unwaxed, it is more likely to catch on the brackets and wires of braces, leaving shreds of floss behind. Consider using waxed floss when wearing braces, as this floss can glide between each tooth with less chance of catching. Be sure to gently slide the floss into the gumline on each side of every tooth.
Use Flossing Tools
Maneuvering floss between the wire and the gumline of each tooth can be very difficult. Try using an orthodontic floss threader to simplify the process. This tool allows you to pull the floss through the teeth between the wire and the gumline. Floss threaders are inexpensive, disposable and easy to use. They are available in most stores that sell toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss.
Help Your Young Children
If you have a young child who is undergoing braces treatment, chances are he or she does not have the dexterity required to floss properly. Likely, you will need to assist your child when he or she flosses. Have him or her sit in a well-lit area while you floss his or her teeth.
