Genetic and certain environmental factors can sometimes have a profound effect on the alignment and orientation of your child’s permanent teeth. This can sometimes cause an overstated underbite or overbite to develop their bite pattern.
Not only can this leave your son or daughter with an unattractive smile, it can also increase their chances of suffering dental fractures and chronic dental attrition. Later in adult life, these dental health problems could foster severe cavities and other complications.
If your son or daughter has a pronounced overbite or underbite, you should consider scheduling a braces consultation at Hamilton & Manuele Orthodontics’s orthodontic clinic. In many of these cases, traditional braces can help correct the problem before more serious complications arise.
After the brackets, wires, and other components have been installed in their mouth, your son or daughter will need to return to see Dr. R. Cree Hamilton every few weeks for a routine adjustment.
This will tension the braces to gradually bring their teeth toward their correct alignment and orientation. The total number of adjustments necessary to correct the malocclusion will vary based on severity.
Once their teeth have been fully corrected the braces components can be uninstalled. Going forward your child will need to use a retainer to make sure your teeth hold their new position.
